He has held the record for the world's richest man since August 2021. Before him, all the recent richest men were mostly Americans. He on the other hand is French.
In recent decades the person who held the record for the richest man in the world for the longest time was the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates.
He held the record from 1997 to 2007, but lost it to Warren Buffet in 2008, gained it back in 2009 only to lose it again to Carlos Slim, the Mexican billionaire who held the title for four years till 2013.
But Bill Gates did make a comeback in 2014 and held the title for another 4 years till 2017.

Jeff Bezos the founder of Amazon held the title from 2018 till 2021. His reign was not continuous though, since Bernard Arnault held the title a few times but it was so brief that we can consider Bezos to be the richest person during that time period.
Then in 2022 Elon Musk got the title and kept it for a whole year, but for a brief second in 2022 Gautam Adani from India became the richest person, but his net worth is highly controversial and not counted in the list.
